Seems to me the keys here are size of vocabulary and even more importantly, whether "training" is required or not. On a PC or in a business setting (e.g., hospital), a little training wouldn't be a big deal since you'd have the same user repeatedly, but for phone commerce, ATM machines, etc, every contact is the first for that person. A training period would be unacceptable, so the software that works without a training period will gain rapid acceptance, if the vocabulary is sufficient for the purpose - i.e., an ATM machine would need a much smaller vocabulary than the L. L. Bean mailorder system.
Fonix claims its system will not require training; Lernout is certainly moving in that direction; both claim to have reached the point where they will accept continuous speech. The next 12 months should be crucial to see who gets the strongest foothold in the market, and it seems Lernout realizes that, as one of its major reasons for acquiring Kurzweil was to speed its process by 6 months. Should be a fun ride!
