Qualcomm introduces new mobile station modem and chipset

Feb 17, 2000 Qcom --- Qualcomm today introduced its first multimedia-enabled Mobile Station Modem (MSM) based on the MSM3300 chipset architecture. The CDMA chipset maker has targeted the new architecture at handsets and other data devices.

Qualcomm Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) Technologies also unveiled its IFR3300 chip, an IF-to-baseband receiver that allows complete integration of a Global Positioning System (GPS)-band radio without other external RF or IF chips.

The MSM3300 architecture is the next generation of the MSM 3100 chipset and system software, the San Diego-based company said.

The announcement comes one day after Qualcomm introduced its new Wireless Internet Launchpad suite with CDMA chipset functions and system software for Internet applications. Certain features will be incorporated into the new MSM3300 chipset. Other Launchpad features will be used in future chipsets, a Qualcomm spokesperson said.

Qualcomm believes the MSM3300 chipset will spur the design of a new generation of CDMA handsets and data devices. The higher on-chip integration will provide for more advanced technologies, the company said, such as the gpsOne position-location solution and Bluetooth, as well as multimedia features like the Qtunes Moving Picture Experts Group layer-3 player software and Compact Media Extension Musical Instrument Digital Interface-based multimedia software.

The new gpsOne devices combine satellite and network information as well as SnapTrack wireless location technology. Qualcomm said its chipset also will be used in a range of future GPS-related software and services.

Samples of the modem and chipset should go out by the third quarter with production volume expected to start by the end of the year.
