Jozef, >>Well I think this pretty much keeps AMD out of the Playstation business.<<

Maybe it will increase the likelyhood that MSFT will pick AMD Athlon over Intel chips.

The implication of this would be huge for AMD. The high end is still partially driven by gamers. If MSFT goes with Athlon, it would mean that every game that can derive any benefit from it would be optimized for 3DNow. It would be a suicide to publish a game that does not run well on the X-Box.

Good comments. I do think it likely that MSFT has chosen AMD for the X-Box...but "when/will the X-Box be released?" I posted an article a couple of days ago that suggested fall 2001, but this would obviously put MSFT well off the PS2 launch. One interesting rumor from that article is that X-Box games will not run on pc, but will need to be developed/ported for the X-Box. If true, this could mitigate any benefits of 3dnow implementations. A late launch date could even further dampen developer support.

Also, it will be interesting to see the cost of the box. At $149 (rumored) with a hard drive, it would be hard to see how AMD could make any money selling even k6-2s.

I get the feeling we'll know more soon.
