jfred-- As you very well know, I mean Reagan's supporters in Congress. And Reagan in fact requested a vastly increased defense budget. (Before you say it, I'm one of those poor misguided souls who believe that the Soviet Union was well on the way to collapse, with or without Star Wars. And before you say that now ex-Soviet biggies say that SW was an important cause, well, to me that smacks of an attempt to cast the blame for a hopelessly failed economic and social system on an outside force.) We have very few Fountains of Truth on Reagan, and probably won't have for decades. It was painfully evident that he was developing Altzheimers as early as his second campaign--remember the embarrassing first debate with Mondale, and then a bit later the weird Helsinki meeting with Gorby?--and yet this is not discussed publicly, though there's plenty of talk about it in private. It's understandable that those who worked for him don't want to tarnish his image, but it's a serious issue that needs to be dealt with. Someday, I suppose, we'll find out who was really running things... Way off the point here... Janice
