'kensey' said: trying to figure out if there is a 'real' market opportunity for the 'superconductor' theme stocks.
but i do know that money has been raining into Conductus (CDTS) in sheets. which is the beauty of TA : you can see where the enthusiasm is and then go and try and figure it out from there ...
each time i read up on a 'super-conductor' play i read that their gear is instrumental in upgrading the wireless infrastructure to 2.5G & 3G from 1G.
and there is also a mention that 1G is not adequate for the upcoming blizzard of data that is going to start coursing through the airwaves as the internet meets wireless.
so there is the implication that a tremendous market opportunity for those companies whose gear ups the data carrying capacity of the existing wireless infrastructure.
that seems to be what Conductus is all about.
now, i'm also thinking how Lucent recently got caught completely flat-footed by the surge in demand for optical gear that increases the bandwidth capabilities of the interet. and that Lucent had to recently spend an inordinate amount of money for Ortel. and saw their shares get wacked while Nortel (NT) sprinted ahead as that company correctly anticipated demand.
could it be that cell carriers get caught flat-footed by a potential increase in demand for wireless networks?
and, is there a JDSU of the superconducting world out there somewhere?
the other stocks that i am aware of in the superconducting group are IMG and SCON. check those out and read up on them.
and if someone has familiarity with what is going on, please post up!!
this is from the recent earnings report from Conductus and mentions the market opportunity for 3G gear.
'The major highlights of the year include:
-- Wireless industry recognition that current generation digital networks (2G) are increasingly suffering from capacity, coverage, and radio frequency (RF) problems, which our ClearSite products have been designed to improve.
-- The emergence of higher bandwidth 2.5 and 3G wireless Internet access systems, an important new opportunity for the deployment of Conductus' technology.
-- Field trials of our new, higher performance, ClearSite systems are in progress with multiple customers for potential 2G and 3G deployment. Our first TDMA trial demonstrated compelling benefits and economic paybacks are expected to be less than one year for many cell sites.
-- We received orders for ClearSite systems from more than 10 wireless operating companies, primarily in analog (1G) applications, following successful field trials and product qualifications.
-- During 1999 we expanded into the Japan market, by announcing a strategic alliance with Seki Technotron as our distributor, and began shipping multiple units of the world's highest performance thin-film, superconducting wireless systems to four customers for qualification testing for potential 3G deployment.
-- We entered into an exclusive partnership agreement with General Dynamics to accelerate our plan to develop a significant superconducting wireless systems business with Government customers.
-- We completed one significant license agreement and two successful financings during 1999 and through January, 2000, providing over $33 million in cash, which puts us in a strong position to exploit the opportunities before us in 2000.
