Mike,

I was just cooking some foods (actually cheap Perdue chickens) in
the microwave and it just dawned on me.

CD-ROMs and its cousins are like electric ovens. And Zip and Jaz
are like microwave ovens. Used to cook with electric ovens all the
time, now I don't even have the patient to wait just 5 minutes for the
microwave to go beep beep...

Most folks can now live without an electric oven, but have a very hard
time without a microwave.

Theoretical speed limit of affordable CDROM is about 10X read, and
a lot less on write. But most importantly, it 's just not a natural media
for writing/recording data over and over. It's just not natural to run a
boat on highway or a car over water, although both can be done.

There are still many natural applications for CDROMs. But I don't think
rewritable data storage is one of them. This is the natural area for harddisks,
Zip, and Jaz.
