Kelly,

If you want to see an extreme example of how the markets can sometimes value one company's equity stakes in another, take a look at Seagate (SEG), a stock that I own.

Presently, Seagate has a portfolio of stocks (Veritas, Sandisk, Gadzoox and CVC) that totals almost $16 billion. All of these holdings are traded in the market, so there is no disputing their value. What does the market put for a value on Seagate? Just below $10 billion! This doesn't even take account of Seagate's disk drive business, which is one of the best in the world. I'm not saying that I would buy SEG, just that sometimes the markets don't give a hoot what the value of equity holdings are.
