Re: HP Athlon 800 at local Best Buy and Micro Center! Also local Sam's has HP Athlon 700 and 550...

I'm kind of surprised by that. Given that Intel and HP designed their future as a joint effort (isn't Willamette / Foster pretty much the end of the 32 bit line? Doesn't desktop go to Madison or Deerfield from there? Isn't the 64 bit Itanium / Mckinley / Madison / Deerfield a team effort by HP and Intel?)

I would have expected Dell to go with Athlon before HP. And HP should have been in a very good position to know that this flood of low cost GHZ+ PIII's was a few weeks away - you can't very well be part of the design team unless you have complete knowledge of the process you are designing for. So why are they adding Athlons all of a sudden? Why would HP bother to add all of those SKUs and commit to supporting for years a platform they should know is (or, perhaps, isn't?) about to be passed by?

Puzzled,

Dan
