Natural law means nothing other than what can be reasonably inferred about how human beings flourish given their nature.

There is a suggestion of immutability in terms like "natural law" and "human nature" that I dislike intensely. It makes them too easy to use as excuses: not so long ago it was quite common to argue that the subordination of women, the second-class status of certain races, the enslavement of the weak by the strong, the conquest and exploitation of foreign peoples, were simply an expression of the natural state of things.

We are what we make ourselves, not what we are made. If we accepted our natural state we'd still be living in caves.
