buck: Since I try to follow both the Q and TI, here is what I think is the situation.

TI does not compete with the Q in CDMA.

TI is a major supplier of non CDMA phones and handsets - GSM and TDMA. Those phones are a huge market for TI's DSP's.

There are zero TI DSP's in the CDMA handsets in which the Q supplies the ASIC's since those ASIC's already incorporate the DSP function. So unless Nokia or some other non Q ASIC is used - where TI could possibly participate in the chips in the phone - there is no current market for TI's DSP's within CDMA otherwise and therefore no potential direct loss.. All to the best of my knowledge and belief. :-) Please correct if I am wrong anyone.

So, the Q is not directly cutting out TI.

But, and this is the big but, unless and until TI has a license from the Q to make CDMA ASIC chips, any phone sold for CDMA using the Q's ASICS, in lieu of one using GSM or TDMA or any other non Q CDMA chip, is a sale TI does not make. A huge loss of market potential for TI looking foward to greater and greater CDMA market penetration within the overall wrieless phone (and handset) market.

And if the Q does move into chips which handle more than CDMA, i.e. GSM also, then it it possible that the Q might cut TI out.

This last is where TI is vulnerable perhaps.

Hope this helps both you and your wife.

Best.

Chaz
