Michael M, very insightful, Re: " other bids likely ".
For sure whoever acquires NN has a clearer shot to theÿ starting pole position.
ATM is fundamental to the telco infrastructure and LU spent 20B for ASND while CSCO spent 6.5 B for Stratacom andÿ NT ?4B for Bay.
Stratcom/CSCO failed and was ditched.
LU/ASND does some work with CLECs but failed miserably in ÿthe big time with MCI/WCOM---> crashed.
NT/Bay have small presence
Marconi/Fore small presence.
The big networks are now ready to buy big time now that -y2K is behind -FCC ruling in their favor. -Small CLEC and LECs and ISPs are going to be caught in theÿ middle of the AOL v. AT&T v. everybody else squabbleÿ about how open fiber bandwidth should be.
-thus RBOCS have a chance to provide giant amount ofÿ ÿbandwidth in form of DSL, 3dsl, LMDS,MMDS and clean up realÿ good.
-all can deploy optical more or less or buy it I think, ÿonce the main infrastructure IP+ATM is set.
It is very possible that CSCO know that ALA is going over NN with a fine tooth comb. If ALA does make an offer thatÿ means that they liked what they saw and that NNÿ " is OK ". So they will jump in with bigger offer. They got tons of cash.
The only impediment I think is that there is someÿ " bad blood " between NN and CSCO/NT accumulated overÿ years of squabbling.
However, hey, 15 - 20 Billion can buy you a giant amount of redress and apology, don't you think so?ÿ A tacit recognition that TM was right all along?
The BOD will tell TM, " hey listen brother, forgive and forget. Let's bury the hatchet and move on with our lives to bigger and better things. Life is short.Let's make hay while the sun shines ".
TM with his back pocket bulging to explode will say " all right you talked me into it".
So I think it is very important NOT TO SELL after the ALA offer. I think we have to be ready for balls 2 and possibly 3,
back much later

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ Larry Pollock, the subject of the thread is Newbridge Networks -- not Z and/or Doug.ÿ Please let us know the next time you have a thought about NN.ÿ
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ IMO, one or more companies other than Alcatel will bid or re-bid by mid-week.ÿ The expected alliance has potential to alter balance of power significantly.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ Analysts and journalists may be stunned by final price tag.ÿ Only a WAG but a really good WAG, I believe.
