Interesting report, Michael.

I hadn't done a backup before, but your post inspired me to overcome my negligence. I backed up to my parallel Zip drive, where I keep several large data backups. I expected a long wait since my machine is slower than yours (PII, 233MHz, 64 MB RAM).

The backup took 12 seconds.

I may be blowing smoke here, but it sounds to me like there is a bus conflict between the IDE from your HDD and the floppy. But, I'm no expert.

Have you considered partitioning your HDD so you can back up to another virtual drive, and then simply copy the backup file to the floppy?
