Belgium to Auction New Mobile Licenses in September Tijd Says
By Thomas Mulier
Brussels, Feb. 19 (Bloomberg) -- The Belgian government will
begin auctioning four licenses to build and operate high-speed
UMTS networks for mobile phones in September, De Financieel-
Economische Tijd reported, citing Belgian Telecommunications
Minister Rik Daems. The government plans to confer the licenses in
December and will give more details before June, the newspaper
said. Seventeen companies, including British Telecommunications
Plc, Colt Telecom Group Plc, Telenet NV, and Vodafone AirTouch
Plc, have had preliminary contacts with the government for more
information, the newspaper said.

The three existing mobile phone networks in Belgium are
operated by Proximus, a unit of Belgacom SA; Mobistar SA, a unit
of France Telecom SA; and a joint venture between Royal KPN NV and
Orange Plc.
