what i find interesting about raising margin on selected stocks is that there is some presumption about the safety of a particular stock or group of stocks and another presumption about the lack of safety of another group.

i suppose bre-x was a marginable stock ? it was included in a toronto index...is ebay safe ? i suppose at this point its a real company that makes a little bit of money. if internet stocks should have higher margin costs then who says which ones, or which ones are even internet stocks ?
is aol 'safe' now that its merged with time warner ? is chuckie schwab an internet stock ? well, i'm sure you get the drift.

i find this too funny, really, that stocks of dubious quality can generate quick margin loan $$$. let a guy try to get a loan for a house or car, the bank really grills you about the collateral.
