Earnings numbers seem to be all over the place. Your us$2 is the lowest one so far.

But If I go to the bce site,
bce.ca

and search for
Highlights of the year (1999 vs. 1998)
the net earnings is C$8.35.

This does include the gain from reduction of their ownership of BellCanada. So, perhaps your $3.11 figure is discounting that gain. For normal companies, that is probably the right thing, but bce is a holding company, it has regularly done 'partial-spinoffs' of assets while starting new ones. In 98, it was nortel, 99 Bell Canada, in 2000, nortel again, so I don't know if discounting this sort of thing is normal.

The numbers are all over the place, very confusing.
