Fiber-more than just bandwidth.

From FOLS website...

Network planners and engineers are specifying optical fiber because of:

1) fiber's error free transmission- not subject to electromagnetic, radio, or microwave interference; doesn't conduct lightning strikes

2) fibers ability to support higher data rates

3) ease of handling, installing, and testing - optical fiber cables are stronger, smaller, and lighter than copper; long distance capability allow all hub electronics to be centrally located (instead of in closets all over the building)

4) fibers's long term economic benefits- fewer network outages, no need to pull new cable as network expands to support higher bandwidth- greatest cost advantage lies in its ability to support higher data rate networks without recabling, therby extending the life of the network infrastructure - a huge advantage with increasingly stringent cabling requirements - fiber gets cheaper than copper as we move from 3 to 4,5,5e, 6 and 7 specifications!!
