cUnq,

Well that was quick. 3 days with a Palm and I'm addicted. Took me that long to realize that the Palm unquestionably satisfied my mobile needs and it is clearly not the "Toy" I thought it was. There is a plethora of great software available for Palm's and I suspect I'll fill up the 4MB quickly so I just drove across town and picked up the Vx at $399. Sheila gets the IIIx which I paid $189 for.

Advantages of the Vx are:

* An Excellent (rather than Good) gray scale display.
* Ultra-thin, anodized aluminum case (half the thickness of the IIIx plastic job and it's only 4 oz. (v. 6 oz. for the IIIx).
* twice the storage capacity of the Palm IIIx (8MB v. 4MB) - Holds approximately a 5-year calendar, 10,000 addresses, 3,000 to-do items, 3,000 memos and 400 e-mail messages in addition to third-party applications.
* Long-life rechargeable lithium ion battery (instead of 2 AAA's) which recharges in the HotSync cradle that attaches to the PC.
* HotSync® operation speed almost twice as fast as th IIIx which is pretty zippy.
* AvantGo (Web Channel Manager) that lets you take Web content with you anywhere is bundled (saves a download).
* Improved infrared support.
* Palm OS® software version 3.3 (v. 3.1.1 for the IIIx)

The reason I made the switch now is that I'm ordering a few accessories and there is a potential trap here. The Palm Vx is a virtually identical OS to the IIIx so plug to plug for applications but it has a different serial connector in its base, so although you can get an auxiliary Go keyboard or Qualcomm QCP 860 Organizer for either, they are actually different models. I suspect that someone will make a convertible adapter one of these days, but none is available yet.

BTW: Check out this site (that was recommended by a friend of mine and which he uses daily. It is a "Killer" portal:

avantgo.com

And, oh BTW ... yes I'm watching for the Palm IPO.
