To be fair, I should point out that McCain fudged the battle flag issue as well. But your larger points about BJU strike right home. In winning S. Carolina, Boy George pandered to the most regressive elements of a regressive state. Bush's family values went out the window for a vote or two on a stage provided by folks who compared dear Poppy to Satan, and would bar his brother Jeb from bringing the little brown ones into the world.

I think it may be instructive to see how this all plays out in Michigan. Reagan Democrats -- white 'ethnics' of Polish, Irish or Italian descent -- found a Republican politics that did not offend their Catholicism. BJU and the hard strain of evangelical Protestantism has as little use for Catholics as it does for Jews, and that's saying something. Ring kissers and beanie wearers can f*ck right off, or not, until they fry for eternity without fail. If they can vote in the Republican primary -- is Michigan an open primary state? -- McCain might surprise the power brokers and prevail.

But even if Gov. Engler's corrupt machine steals the Michigan vote for Bush -- especially likely as McCain has eschewed calling Boy George to task for his outrages -- the November voters will have a second chance. Gore will remind them.
