The Financial Post reports in a Hot Stock corporate profile, a Bloomberg
dispatch, in its Wednesday edition that the demise of Hudson's Bay's main
department-store rival last year was supposed to be just what the big
Canadian
retailer needed. Reporter Sandra Keeley says that with Eaton's out of the
business
after 130 years, Hudson's Bay chief executive George Heller could focus his
Zellers discount stores on winning back market share from Wal-Mart Stores,
while the company's Bay department stores benefited from less competition.
Instead, Hudson's Bay shares are extending a two-year slump. The stock has
lost
nearly a fifth of its value this year and last week touched a 26-year low of
$12.65.
Its 52-week high is $23.85. The stock rose 35 cents to $14.50 on Tuesday.
Investors are concerned that Zellers, with 304 stores, is losing its battle with
Wal-Mart. They are also worried that the Bay chain has not exploited the
retail
vacuum left by Eaton's at a time when Canada's economy is expanding at the
fastest pace in a decade.
