No. The effective anxiolytics are sledgehammers. Imagine starting a kid on a Xanax habit. (It would be like alcoholism - all-consuming, no return, only lifelong Recovering status) And SSRIs are inappropriate unless there is true biochemical depression going on. There is a tremendous romanticizing of Prozac going on in all levels of our society. Sure, for those who need it it is the bread of life. But often it is prescribed or taken for disaffection or as a cognitive octane boost. I worry about THIS more than much else - the feeling of entitlement that has grown in all layers of our society for a pill that'll make things OK.

We need more programs - or better yet, lifestyles - that make drugs unneccessary for dealing with daily life. Drugs should be reserved as medicinals (including antidepressants and anxiolytes) and for ritual use (psychedelics).

What would the elderly do with all that pot, speed, ecstasy etc? Hmmmmm...
