Buck, Cisco is a big promoter of non-proprietary open standards, but their own Gorillahood is based on their proprietary open standard, IOS. Many think that Cisco's business is based on equipment, such as routers and hubs, but as I understand it, it is their proprietary software that has made them ascendant.
