Jochen- Here's another example of how similar the Last Mile battle in Europe is to the US battle. Albeit, the only difference is about a year or so lag time. Hopefully the Europeans learn from our mistakes and broadband doesn't take as long to take off as it has taken in the US. -MikeM(From Florida)

France Telecom Ordered To Open ADSL Market Within 2 Months

PARIS -- The French competition council has ordered former French monopoly France Telecom (FTE) to open the ADSL market to competitors within two months, France Telecom said Friday.

France Telecom said it will "carefully examine" the request.

The council's decision follows a complaint filed by 9 Telecom, the French subsidiary of Telecom Italia SpA (TI), late last year.

Asynchronous digital subscriber lines, or ADSL, are accessible via the copper wires on which France Telecom have a monopoly. The copper wires have become crucial to telecommunications operators because they allow high-speed Internet access.

However, the competition council has rejected 9 Telecom's request to suspend the extension of France Telecom's ADSL network as long as the market isn't liberalized, France Telecom said.

The French government said earlier that the ADSL market should be liberalized by the end of the year.
