JVC Selects National Semiconductor for Its New Line of DVD Players;
Companies Partner to Define the Next Generation DVD-on-a-Chip Solution

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb 21, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- National
Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today announced that JVC has
selected the next generation National(R) Mediamatics(TM) DVD-on-a-Chip
solution for its new line of consumer DVD players. JVC will use this
new chip in two next generation DVD players, the XV-D721 and XV-D723,
both scheduled for worldwide shipment in early summer. JVC recently
demonstrated both of these DVD players in its booth at the 2000
International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

JVC has worked closely with the National Mediamatics group on the
development of the next generation DVD-on-a-Chip solution, offering
valuable technical advice and insight on the key features and functions
that consumers want in a DVD player. The launch of the XV-D721 and
XV-D723 brings this partnership to fruition, delivering two of the most
advanced full-featured DVD players available today - at a time when the
DVD industry is experiencing tremendous growth. According to Cahners
In-Stat Group, a leading market research firm, annual shipments of DVD
players will double in 2000.

"JVC chose to partner with National Semiconductor because we believe
its Mediamatics group has a very high caliber of digital video
expertise, both in hardware and software," said Yasuo Kaizu, general
manager of the Optical Disc Business Planning Department in JVC's AV &
Multimedia sector. "Our close partnership has provided JVC with the
state-of-the art technical feature set required by next generation DVD
players."

Designed and developed by the National Mediamatics group, the next
generation DVD-on-a-Chip provides manufacturers with the latest DVD
video and audio features demanded by the fast-growing DVD market. The
chip integrates all the back-end functions of a world-class DVD player,
including host processing, video and audio processing, I/O functions
and video DACs, into a single chip. This level of integration provides
manufacturers with improved performance, significant cost savings and
greater design flexibility.

"We are very pleased about our partnership with JVC, which will help
deliver the next level of audio and video entertainment experience to
consumers," said Prem Nath, president of the Mediamatics group at
National Semiconductor. "National is recognized today for having the
highest quality and best price/performance DVD solution on the market.
This partnership - National's Mediamatics hardware and software DVD
expertise and JVC's technology and understanding of the DVD market -
has resulted in the highest available level of feature integration,
allowing us to offer a single chip solution that not only meets the
requirements of next generation DVD players, it exceeds them."

In addition to providing all the standard DVD functions, National's
next generation DVD-on-a-Chip solution will bring the living-room
experience to the next level of entertainment, providing such features
as progressive scan video, DVD audio, 3D stereo surround sound, DTS
audio decode and karaoke functions. In addition, the DVD-on-a-Chip
solution also includes a complete software developer's kit (SDK) that
facilitates customization and rapid time to market.
