First, I did not, did not, did not buy 3Com in 1996,1997 or 1998 and I did not think their Emerging Market mantra would become feasible until I began to see VoIP, LAN telephony, Broadband and Wireless begin to take hold with consumers. It was the latter part of March 1999 that I decided the time had come to invest in 3Com. The company was in the initial stages of a complete overhaul, it was replete with cash and its' prescience of the Emerging markets coincided with my vision. To make my investment more cogent I noticed that the company was grossly undervalued. I asked myself, how can the markets ascribe less than $7 billion to a company that generates close to $6 billion in revenues, replete with cash and some of the most coveted patents? My next question was predicated on the Palm and how well it would do in the market. After using it I saw a potential gem. I told myself if 3Com can turn the Palm into an ubiquitous devise and conquer MSFT in the process, then they will have redeemed themselves from their past failures. Remember, many companies before had failed and currently MSFT was becoming their latest victim. All this because of 3Com's mgmt. and don't ever fool yourself otherwise.
