As I understand it, the MII service provides caching of most web pages relatively near the end users, thereby minimizing the number of packet router-to-router "hops" needed to display a given web element. Although an individual packet on the public internet may theoretically require only 80 microsecs to arrive at its destination, a typical web object is composed of multiple packets that may follow multiple paths, causing typical access times per object to extend to 300-600 microseconds. In other words, the object display time is limited by the slowest packet. The decentralization of AOL servers should provide a first order improvement in access speed insofar as content that is cached within, say Germany, will not have to travel through a convoluted path in the US to reach German end users. This approach is still far less effective than the MII method of dynamically caching a substantial portion of the internet locally at major nodes. AOL may well become a customer for MII, as may Global Center and other major internet service providers.

Presumably the major ISP's will be able to use MII caching features as a selling point when marketing their service to ebusiness. If the caching is as effective as the claims, and the patent protection is adequate, MII caching may well become essential for ISP's to provide competitive service.
