John Kaiser, in his recent letter, writes:

"South African mines, which are by far the world's biggest
platinum producer and the second biggest palladium producer, are already
operating at capacity. Most of the South African production comes from the
Bushveld Complex where narrow high grade sheets called reefs dip thousands
of metres into the Bushveld. South African production expansion is hampered
by the fact that as the miners move downdip operating conditions become
more difficult and consequently more expensive. The narrowness of the reefs
limits the applicability of bulk mining methods. The biggest potential for growth
is on the eastern periphery of the Bushveld Complex where PGM bearing ore
is lower grade but thicker and amenable to bulk mining. This is the area
where Anooraq is exploring its Platreef project. "
