Miramar Mining and Northern Orion Explorations face a wrongful dismissal suit
from the former manager of their Cuban operations. In a statement of claim filed
Thursday in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, Jorge Nicanovich of Havana
claims he was terminated without reasonable notice or cause on Dec. 30. In the
suit, Vancouver lawyer Israel Chafetz of Taylor Jordan Chafetz notes that his
client was hired by Miramar as country manager for Cuba on March 12, 1993,
and the operations were transferred to Orion in December of 1995.
Mr. Nicanovich claims his duties included handling the negotiation of all mining
agreements with the Cuban government, dealing with all political and public
relations in Cuba, handling all communications and liaison with joint venture
partners, and co-ordinating all accounting, human resources, administrative and
operational matters in Cuba. At the time of termination, he was paid an annual
base salary of $120,000 (U.S.) plus bonuses and a benefits package which
included housing and car allowances and living expenses.
The suit seeks unspecified damages. Statements of defence have not yet been
filed.
