Miramar, Northern Orion sued by former Cuban manager

In a statement of claim filed Thursday in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, Jorge Nicanovich of Havana claims he was terminated without reasonable notice or cause on Dec. 30. In the suit, Vancouver lawyer Israel Chafetz of Taylor Jordan Chafetz notes that his client was hired by Miramar as country manager for Cuba on March 12, 1993, and the operations were transferred to Orion in December of 1995. Mr. Nicanovich claims his duties included handling the negotiation of all mining agreements with the Cuban government, dealing with all political and public relations in Cuba, handling all communications and liaison with joint venture partners, and co-ordinating all accounting, human resources, administrative and operational matters in Cuba. At the time of termination, he was paid an annual base salary of $120,000 (U.S.) plus bonuses and a benefits package which included housing and car allowances and living expenses.
