Stockdale didn't quit, exactly. He never was Perot's actual VP. He filled in during that debate because someone had to appear on behalf of Perot's ticket. I'm not sure where Choate was when this was going on, it could be that Perot didn't yet have a chosen running mate.

The press did Stockdale a great disservice, but it's not in his nature to complain. The man is very much heroic, but the unknowing American public thinks of him as a sort of clown.
