I think it DOES matter where you think your beliefs come from. I submit (as a mere theory) that it is easier to do evil in the guise of doing good if you think you are required to do it because something outside of yourself requires it, and that doing the evil is in fact "right".

Thus if you had a holy book that told you if you killed people who do not believe as you do you would get a ticket straight to heaven I submit that belief in that book would make it MUCH easier for you to kill your fellow humans, and easier for you to kill than if you did not have the book, and if you had to justify your belief internally. I think I have an example from life to illustrate that point.

I think if you surrender your control over belief to another entity- whether you call ti God, or the Devil, or Mao, you will lose what is best about humanity. And because people are so willing to surrender I take a rather dim view of the future of humanity.
