Silicom does it again.... NEWS:
SILICOM and a Global Provider of ADSL Modems Embark on Joint Development Project Tue Feb 22 10:03:00 EST 2000
KFAR SAVA, Israel, Feb 22, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- -- The Partner, A Supplier to Major Telecom Carriers, To
Incorporate Silicom's USB Interface--
SILICOM LTD. (NASDAQ: SILCF) announced today that it has signed an agreement with a global manufacturer of DSL systems and access products to develop and supply a USB interface for next generation ADSL modems.
ADSL is emerging as a popular and cost-effective solution for high speed digital transmission over existing copper telephone wires. Silicom's joint development partner, one of the world's major suppliers of DSL systems to RBOCs and telecom carriers around the world, expects to sell millions of ADSL modems over the next several years.
To succeed in penetrating the mass market, ADSL service providers understand that they must simplify the "last ten feet" -- the connection between the broadband modem and the PC. To meet this requirement, the industry is beginning to recognize the convenience of the PC's external USB port, which enables true Plug-and-Play connections. The choice of Silicom by this major industry player demonstrates that Silicom's USB enabling technology is one of the most advanced and cost-effective in the industry.
Commenting on the news, Avi Eizenman, President and CEO of Silicom Ltd., said, "We are proud that this large and prestigious supplier of ADSL modems has chosen our USB technology as the best in the industry. We have set a rapid development schedule which we believe will speed the time to market of their new-generation modems. "This agreement is an important step in our strategy to become the time-to-market and quality partner of choice for broadband Internet access and home networking manufacturers, integrators, and installers. ADSL has shown early signs of success, and has the potential to be adopted by many millions of users. External USB ports are now commonplace in consumer PCs, and it is natural to leverage them for convenient and high performance ADSL connections.
"In the last few weeks, we have announced similar cooperations with other broadband and home networking players. The entire market segment has been gaining momentum, as evidenced by Microsoft's recent investment in Itran Communications Ltd., with whom we are developing a USB to Powerline adapter. Taken together, we believe these activities validate the excellence of our advanced USB technology, and we feel well positioned to benefit as broadband services begin to penetrate the mass market."
