This GTE announcement on Friday has PC positive implications:
they are positive as the trend is moving toward programming your mobile phone wirelessly via the PC to contain the information you want on your mobile. obviously, you need a PC to program your mobile unit. the PC is not dead. used in conjunction with your mobile unit, it becomes a necessary piece of hardware. PC stations in Japan will allow programing downloads. but, for most, owning your own PC will be the preferred path. Nokia believes that information downloads will transfer to your mobile unit; with GTE's application - and now several others - the PC becomes invaluable.
this applies not only to reprogramming your mobile unit for simple downloading tasks - but also for new mobiles that are softcore dependent (as opposed to hardcore which 99.999% of all mobiles are now - several firms in Europe experimenting with softcores).
February 18, 2000 GTE Wireless launches mobile Internet services ATLANTA?GTE Wireless introduced new mobile Internet services it believes solve the difficulty of weeding through the vast amount of information on the Internet. ??We saw that the existing wireless Internet services were not meeting the needs of customers,?? said Marc Lefar, vice president of marketing with GTE Wireless. ??So we set out to solve the two biggest problems?there?s too much information on the Internet to be easily accessed on a wireless phone, and it?s too difficult to navigate through multiple Web sites to get all the information needed while on the go.??
GTE Wireless is introducing a new personal Web page, www.mygtew.com, that offers customers the ability to use their desktop personal computers to tailor the exact information they want to see on their phone screens. In addition, users can instruct the Web page to contact them when certain events occur, such as a stock hitting a certain price.
To make Internet navigation easier, GTE developed a service that allows users to move from one piece of related information to another. For instance, a person thinking about going to a movie needs to know what movies are playing, where they?re playing and at what times. GTE Wireless said its service will allow the user to look up the film listings, click quickly to reviews and then on to theater schedules by using the built-in logic of the service.
