What stopped Vengold was the POG - price of gold. Nothing wrong with the investment but when gold went down to $250 an ounce (the result of some high level intervention if you believe GATA) gold stocks simply became unpopular in the market. There are still a number of well managed gold and gold exploration companies trading at below their "cash in the bank" value. The market actually values their gold assets at a negative value. Vengold was in that position so they simply decided to cut their losses and invest in a more popular sector.

I continued to buy from 1997 until late 1999 because I believe that Vengold has good managers IMO who manage their money well, employ top staff and are well connected in financial circles so they know how to get money on the right terms.
