Why would it be so beneficial to pass the power back to states and localities when you do not know what laws state legislators, alderman and municipal councils will pass? My view is that state and local legislators are just as apt to pass oppressive laws and taxes, and probably (because less attention is focused on them) more subject to corruption and to the temptations of graft.

GREAT question. The answer is, if states or localities pass oppressive laws you can move somewhere more to you liking. If the Federal government does, what can you do?

The founders were the opposite of utopians. The were practical politicians ( in the best sense of the word ) who understood human nature perfectly. Their solution of distributing power to sovereign states and between 3 coequal branches on the Federal level is beautiful and has worked better than any system yet conceived by man. It breaks my heart to see my countrymen turn their backs on it.
