[1.5M Vs 6M]
Hi bill:
As an Amati shareholder, I am not so worried about this. All Amati modems are rate adaptive. If I am not mistaken, Amati has stated that their modems will/already? support SNMP control, including control of the maximum data rate. Thus the service provider (GTE etc) can set the maximum service data rate to a customer at 1.5M, if they wish, eventhough the customer is connected with an O8 with maximum rate of 8M. I think they had a release about an agreement with (Euristics ?) to develop SNMP support and allow NMS control of Amati's equipments, perhaps somebody can verify this. So Amati has/already had a 1.5M solution. Better yet, Amati has a 1.5-8M solution, an upgradable solution that will be of interest to service providers looking forward to the day when they will be able to provide up to 8M service.
Whats going to win/lose $$$ for Amati will not be 1.5M Vs 6M but other factors like power consumption, real world performance and, of course, price of the Modems & DSLAMs (e.g. if they can sell O8 at a competetive price to a CAP 1.5 Modem <g>). If we win on these grounds, we are sure to hit a home run in terms of $$$. I am hoping that they will reach these goals with the CG and TI DSP versions of the O8.
All of the above are, of course, IMHO. Perhaps somebody else, with better technical familiarity with these issues, can comment or correct any mistakes above.
