If you want to sell ... you sell at the bid ...

If you want to buy ... you buy at the asked ...

If you want to split the difference ... you take your chances whether or not you get filled one way or the other.

The difference between the bid and the ask is the spread ...

The spread is the profit margin that a middle man (who may take various forms based upon the Exchange) gets for handling the trade.

In short ... if I sell a stock and you buy it ... there is no direct transfer ... it goes in and out of someone's inventory before it gets to you.

This may be a over simplification of how the system works and I'm certain I will be corrected. :-)
