You are correct, every install generates a new number.
How do they know if you paid for it? They don't. They do know
if one copy of software is being installed on how many computers.
I told them I have several computers but was the only user which is true. They said no problem. I also told them I reformat my HD every couple months. Then they suggested I use my name so they know it's the same guy every time...
A few installs probably doesn't raise a flag but hundreds will...

Yes, I remember Melissa. I believe word watermarks to something but I'm not sure how it does it. I'm wondering about other documents.
