Mike and Thread,

The cover of this month's Digital Camera magazine is dedicated to Carver Mead's Foveon camera. This is a very high resolution camera that employs 3 separate 16 megapixel CCD's for each color (R,G,B) and eliminates something know as the MoirŠ effect which is an unusual color pattern that arises when a series of parallel lines is photographed with a standard single CCD element. This happens due to pixel interpolation which is required as a software enhancement on all digital cameras aimed at the consumer market. I believe this artifact also occurs with CMOS sensors. As I mentioned earlier the Foveon camera has a Canon lens (protuberance) attached to the imaging element attached to an Apple PowerBook laptop PC. (It looks like a rather obscene laptop if you can imagine.) The camera is apparently intended only for studio use (unless you plan on taking a laptop on a tripod with a large telephoto lens protruding out the back on your next trip to Florida) and lists for $50,000.00 dollars. I think there is a removable hard drive for each photo as raw images take up something like 3,983,457 jiggabytes.

Foveon is apparently a favorite of the legendary George Gilder, but it turns out that this technology will never be able to be produced economically for the masses.

Meanwhile my poor old Epson 850Z continues to take crappy, jaggedy, "MoirŠd" 66 kilobyte images suitable for just about nothing.

Go figure!
