This makes it possible for the cable co to get by with less capital expenditure. The development of interference and noise in a cable plant ususally takes place on a very slow time frame. There are many cheper ways to deal with such issues. It is doubtful if the technology is very beneficial to the cable operator. BRCM provides a DOCSIS cable modem on just one or two chips. This has gotten the price of a complete modem well down into the sub-$100 price range. THe BRCM chip enables the SFA explorer 2000 settop to handle digital video at a reasonble price. TERN is a good two years behind companies like SFA in providing solutions for digital TV. I generally don't bet on companies which get into a business withthe strategy of selling at a loss, "work out the technology later" in the hopes of getting mkt share. If the technology is so good, then they can figure out how to make a profit.
