How about my current electrical utility company? ...Seems like they would have a head start if they chose to take advantage of it.

Actually they figure in the whole plan. The big-big-big idea is to move from a oil based economy to a hydrogen based one. At the heart of most of these machines is a hydrogen fuel cell. Where does the hydrogen come from? Well, eventually it will be supplied to you as pure hydrogen (probably stored in a tank using metal hydrides). But to start with, we will get the hydrogen from natural gas.

So you buy your PLUG/GE box from your local distributor (who may also be your utility). You then feed it natural gas from your utility. Hydrogen is taken from the natural gas and fed to the fuel cell. So the utility makes money and wants to promote the product and PLUG/GE makes money and the consumer gets some independence plus lower electrical cost.

The micro fuel cells are fairly exciting too because they will be in all the cell phones/laptops/palm pilots, etc. The batteries will last much longer and are rechargeable by just adding more liquid (you never throw the battery away). As handheld devices add new tricks, like the palm pilot that is now going to color, the demand for these will be strong.

Incidentally, since PALM is going public next week and they damn near own the market, should we consider them a gorilla?
