Report Critical of Ex-CIA Director
By TOM RAUM Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) - Former CIA Director John Deutch apologized Tuesday for using unsecured home computers to work on some of the nation's most sensitive secrets, saying ``I very much regret my errors.'
Deutch's apology came as a congressional panel released an internal CIA report asserting that Deutch knew that his home computers connected to the Internet were vulnerable - but took no steps to protect the material.
``At no time did I intend to violate security rules,' Deutch said. ``The director of Central Intelligence is not above the rules.'
The investigation resulted in his being stripped last year of his security clearances.
Deutch spoke before cameras after emerging from a two-hour closed door session with the Senate Intelligence Committee.
The CIA report, released by the panel, also suggests the current CIA director, George Tenet, and other top ranking agency officials of waiting too long to refer the matter to the Justice Department and to the congressional oversight committee.
Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., the committee chairman, said that despite Deutch's apologies, both before the committee and to reporters, the panel remained ``deeply troubled' and intends to investigate further.
``I know he's a bright man and he served the government a long time, but he wasn't serving it very well,' Shelby said. He said he would not rule out seeking criminal prosecution. [snip]
