From ALA-NN merger press release:
"The two companies [Newbridge Networks and Alcatel] have strong product synergies in LMDS radio access networks and complementary customer bases, which position Alcatel as a world leader in this fast growing market."

Denis and Thread- Speaking of the urban alternative, LMDS, looks like NN and ALA may be an excellent combo. Especially if they really do have, "complementary," customers for LMDS. Here are a couple of posts that reiterate how Alcatel was doing, and how Newbridge was doing with LMDS, BEFORE the buyout:
