Nokia: Wednesday February 23, 8:45 am Eastern Time

(note that time division duplexing is the key to download links from sites like Amazon - either to your mobile unit, or your laptap computer - doesn't matter which - it is the TDD function sponsored by Nokia and IDC that will make possible the dowload of complete books, records, videos, etc., specifically designed for download in an urban enviornment)

Nokia teams with Amazon.com in mobile commerce

HANOVER, Germany, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia (NYSE:NOK - news) said on Wednesday that it and U.S. on-line bookseller Amazon.com (NasdaqNM:AMZN - news) would launch an electronic commerce service for users of WAP mobile phones.

``It is the intention of both companies that the mobile commmerce service that launched today in the UK will be later extended around the world to other Amazon sites,' Nokia said in a statement.

Nokia said Amazon.com was launching a new website (www.amazon.co.uk) on which users of WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) Internet-enabled mobile phones could search and purchase from Amazon.com's on-line catalogue.

``Nokia and Amazon.com have worked together developing the service and will promote the Amazon.com services on the Club Nokia website,' Nokia said in the release from the CeBit technology fair in Germany.

``Amazon.com will be the first major company to be promoted in Club Nokia,' it added.

As part of the agreement, Nokia and Amazon.com will conduct marketing campaigns in 2000 and 2001 to promote the relationship between the two companies, Nokia said.

``Amazon.com is an excellent service to complement other mobile Internet services available today,' Nokia said.

Nokia launched the world's first WAP phone last year, and it says it expects the number of mobile devices with Internet access to exceed the number of personal computers linked to the Internet by as early as 2003.
