DJ Taiwan's Compal/Qualcomm -2: New-Generation CDMA Phones

TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--Taiwan's Compal Electronics Inc. (Q.CPE) and Qualcomm Inc. of the U.S. signed Wednesday an agreement for Compal to use the U.S. company's technology to produce new-generation code division multiple access, or CDMA, mobile phones.

Financial terms of the deal weren't available.

In a bid to tap the rapid growth in the telecommunications industry, Compal has ventured into the industry and will focus on CDMA cell phones and Internet appliance products, it said in a press release.

Currently, Compal is the third-largest notebook PC manufacturer in Taiwan, with sales from notebook PCs, accounting for around 80% of total revenue. It also produces liquid crystal display monitors.

Compal shares closed NT$1.5 lower at NT$102.5 ($1=NT$30.790) Wednesday.
