I got to agree with you about the interesting race. I like McCain and Bush both, on a personal level, though I prefer McCain, a much more interesting story vs. W's anointing by the establishment. I'd never vote for either, of course, I don't vote that side of the spectrum. I might consider it, except for the prospect of a couple more Scalia / Thomas types on the Supreme Court, a likely outcome if either Bush or McCain becomes President. That happens, we'd see some real culture wars in a few years.
The interesting thing about the gnashing of teeth over McCain getting crossover votes, maybe some of the G.O.P. establishment types will figure out someday that everybody gets to vote in Nov. A populist conservative ( and McCain is, by all indications, really quite conservative) would seem to be just the ticket. Personally, I hope they don't figure it out, but it is fairly obvious.
Funny thing about the next round of primaries, with the arcane delegate selection rules, McCain could do really well, over all, in Cal. and N.Y. and come away with no delegates, leaving Bush in command. That would be even more interesting.
