House Committee Chairman Accuses China Of Intimidating Taiwan

(CNSNews.com) -The Chairman of the House International Relations Committee on Tuesday accused Communist China of engaging in an effort to intimidate Taiwan and had harsh criticism for the Clinton administration on its commitments to Taiwan.

Congressman Benjamin Gilman (R-NY) said on Capitol Hill, "I am deeply concerned about China's latest effort to intimidate Taiwan. It is a clear example of how the Clinton administration has led Beijing to believe the United States will not stand behind its moral and security commitments to Taiwan. The administration's policy of accommodation toward Beijing has proven to be ineffective and is destabilizing the region. A firmer stance toward Beijing is required."

On Monday, Communist China, in what its government calls a new "white paper," threatened to use "drastic measures, including military force" if Taiwan delayed indefinitely on unification talks. It gave no timetable.

Meanwhile, in Taiwan on Tuesday, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council accused Communist China of hindering progress toward unification.

Council spokesman Lin Chong-Pin told reporters in Taipei, "Since 1949, the two sides of the Taiwan strait have been under separate rule, neither subordinate (cont)
