Great point. As a late-twenties moderate-independent, I love neither the democrats or republicans as a party. However, I have for some time now considered myself a democrat-by-default simply because the religious right scares the crap out of me. I think there are many out there like me who would vote republican (based on a platform of reform, integrity, tax cuts, debt paydown, and defense) if the candidate could manage to distance himself from the establishment ultra conservative right (NRA, bible beaters, pro-lifers).

I think McCain has done this very adeptly and that this fact goes a long way to explain why people like myself are showing up to support him.
