Alright, what about the impact in Siberia in 1908? As far as anyone knows there were no close observers, but it certainly was not "inconsequential".

By the same token, a mini black hole colliding with Earth in 1700 would've been of some significance, although no one at the time would have observed it until almost at the point of death -- and then no one would have known what was destroying the world.
