Sorry to hear about Lovey. Did she take the "Heart of the Ocean" down with her? For insurance purposes anyway, I imagine.

The Democratic party is all over the place ideologically. Not very good at party discipline, either. Overall, you have to give them an entry something like the Earth got in the revised Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy. Mostly harmless.

Within the narrower confines of the "big tent" Republican party, there is room for somebody I could vote for. Fiscal conservative, social libertarian. Someone like William Weld, maybe. Jack Kemp would almost fit, except I think he was pretty into voodoo economics. Barry Goldwater, bless his heart. I see echoes of Barry in McCain, except he's got a bit too much of the RR in him to be a real libertarian.

I think the current Rep mainstream voodoo economics / holy roller track is a little problematic. I think it goes back to Nixon's "Southern Strategy", which was pretty good pragmatic politics, but ended up leaving the G.O.P. boxed in with holy roller set.

Cheers, Dan.
