I miss your point. Lotsa stuff exists, probably, but I can't talk coherently about stuff which nobody has observed, let alone described. Quasaes are a described phenomenon, and with a twelve-inch glass the amateur can even see bright examples directly. People have observed comets for millennia. Only recently (400 yrs) has the phenomenon "comet" received more than just phenomenological press.
At the other (deep) end, there are many accounts of abduction by aliens. However I have trouble integrating such claimed observations into my own little theory of the way things work.
For me, the point of lively discussion centers on testing for consistency the phenomenological descriptions of things we sense. The inconsistent ones drive us to either reject the data or stretch our model. Stretch the model without convincing your peers, and for better or for worse, you're branded a crackpot. Crackpots outnumber real visionaries by a healthy margin.
