Seagate's holdings in SanDisk

After this Tuesday's stock split Seagate now owns over 10 million SNDK shares valued at $760,000,000.00 based on yesterday's closing price of $76.00/share.

Lexar Media, SanDisk's chief competitor in the digital film market (CompactFlash or "CF"), is planning to go ahead with an IPO despite ongoing litigation with SanDisk which centers around Lexar's controller technology and possible infringement of SanDisk's CF assembly patents.

Lexar has everything to lose from an unsuccessful defense of its CF assembly/controller technology. There are additional players in the CF market who also private label Lexar CF cards, so the problem extends beyond their borders...

There is a vein of gold running through the current Seagate equity holdings. I also firmly believe that the Dragon System holdings are invaluable. Recall that this company dedided against an IPO last year and has had highly sophisticated voice recognition software aimed at the consumer market on store shelves for nearly two years.
